About RatPack
Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a powerful pedagogical strategy, but facilitating the various phases of Readiness Assurance Tests (RATs) and Team Application Exercises (tAPP) manually or with disparate software can often be a source of frustration. The traditional flow, conducted over paper forms or poorly integrated clickers, can be confusing, unstructured, and difficult to manage at scale. We saw this challenge firsthand and knew there had to be a better way.
The Story Behind RatPack
RatPack was born from a simple idea: to streamline academic peer-learning management, empowering students and educators to focus on what truly matters—learning and collaboration.
This application was ideated and brought to life as a passion project started in February 2026 within the makerspace environment of Hackerspace MMU. While RatPack is an independent creation and not officially affiliated with the organisation, we are proud of our roots in a community of problem-solvers and builders.
What We Do
RatPack is a robust, real-time web application designed to facilitate the Team-Based Learning (TBL) pedagogy. It provides a dedicated platform where students can participate in sessions via their phones, and lecturers can manage the flow in real-time. The system enables lecturers to:
- Create courses, manage students, and group them into teams dynamically using intelligent algorithms.
- Conduct Individual Readiness Assurance Tests (iRAT) and Team Readiness Assurance Tests (tRAT) with real-time feedback.
- Review live analytics during sessions via heatmaps and answer tallies.
- Facilitate comprehensive peer evaluations using structured methodologies like the Fink point distribution method.
- Employ the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF-AT) to reward team persistence and iteration.
Our Mission
Our mission is to make it easier to bring collaboration and active learning into classrooms implementing Team-Based Learning. We believe that by addressing the administrative burdens of TBL, educators can invest more time in addressing student misconceptions. By providing the right tools, we hope to help both students and lecturers navigate the TBL process with clarity and confidence.
